The writing of a television show can make all the difference in the world. Sure you may like an actor on the show or be a long time viewer, but even still the writing can turn you on or off. I am a huge House fan, and I had been watching the series since it started back in 2004, but I stopped watching because for me the writing did not do it for me. I found other shows to occupy the hour I use to watch House, and then of course like most shows as the series was coming down to an end the writing got really good. I was not really a fan of House and Cuddy's relationship which shocked me because all I wanted since the first episode "Everybody Lies" was them to be together, and in love.
A show with really great writing is Doctor Who. The last two seasons were so well done it blew my mind. The whole season made sense in that last episode of the season, and you thought you had it figured out only it was a lie. You didn't know what the hell was going on, you wish you did but Steven Moffat wanted to keep you on your toes. He has a way of getting you hooked into his stories which is a great gift for a writer to have especially while writing for a tv show. Anyone who has seen the recent Doctor in action knows that his storylines are insanely crazy and if you missed more than one episode you were extremely lost. I like to think while I am watching shows, and that is why I like shows like Doctor Who, it isn't a show about who is screwing who its an actual thought out show.
Not saying I don't like shows that are not made to make you think because I do enjoy the occasional relaity show. Writing is an art, and whomever has that talent is a hero to me because it takes a lot for somebody's writing to captivate someone. An older show that I thought the writing was well done was Joss Whedon's work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He made the show sad, funny, and just plain weird sometimes, even after seven seasons I still wanted more. He knew what he was doing when he decided to take the failure of the Buffy movie and turn it into a series full of characters who you actually liked. The actors were their characters, they made Joss's words come to life, and it sometimes made me cry. I don't know about you but when in the season two finale "Becoming Part 2" when Angelus last minute becomes Angel again, and Buffy has to go through with killing him because he had already opened the portal to hell. I cried, in that moment I felt bad for Buffy because she had to kill the love of her life, and then I came back to reality and mentaly said "okay calm the fuck down its a show." Moments like that make me happy because a tv show had that much of inpact on me while watching it.
I think shows with great writing should last longer, and I hate when good shows get cancelled because of the ratings. I wish there were less reality shows because all these dating shows are getting on my nerves. I like that there seems to be more dramas coming out that actually seem promising to watch this Fall season.
